Back Country Roads Poem by Laurence Overmire

Back Country Roads

She lived in a cocoon
All her life
And believed
Life was simply black and white
God good world without contradiction
Safe inside she
Cooked and cleaned and mended

Socks

Believing in cold damnation for all
Those unfortunate souls who
Didn't think
Like she did
Mother, father, brother, son
All damned, all fodder for the
Fires of hell
This jealous God she
Bowed and prayed to
Kept her

Holy

And alone
Warm cocoon, always germinating but
Never born.
