Baghdad Basement Poem by Lisa Willms

Baghdad Basement

Mama's arms squeezing around me
crouching like a lion
muttering prayer
muscles sinewy and tight
forehead folding in the middle
lips trying to smile

She sings a lullaby
to try to keep her breathing light
panting panic just on the other side
I try to hear over sky monsters screaming
and thunder the same time as lightning
I look to her eyes for answers
...They answer nothing back.
