Battle-Scarred Heart Poem by Megan Baker

Battle-Scarred Heart

Time has taken a heavy toll on me
In a never-ending story I know too well
And here I am - the lonely that knows no content
And all around me they never notice
Just how breakable I am right now
And just what ails me - I'd never tell
Few would know the pain I harbor
And if they did they'd be in awe at how I carry on
There's a heart inside battle-scarred by my traitors
And a hollow space where a soul would be in a believer
It seems all that's left in me
Is everything we hate
So how can they say there's any good left in me
When I feel so broken and everything feels so wrong
They'll never know just how horrid I have felt
And the ache inside a hollow heart
Everyone says is filled with tender care
Even though it binds me here -
Constricts me until I have no air
And in this daily pain
I can't help but wonder 'what is there to gain? '
