Before Sundown Poem by Oluwatosin Richard Shiba Aribo

Before Sundown

Of course there were
Days
we plundered,
like an army of unthinking adolescents
we lynched the minutes with nothingness'
reveling as revelers do
headlong!
We plunged into maladies
Chewed up the hours
Like a gum'
Ran wild like bums'
Left the past in a huge entanglement'
How those hours mock us now.

Still our resolve must not go
Flabby'
We needs must rise early,
Ahead
Of the constant morning dew
Ahead of the cocks that crow
Go into the inns, the alleys, the farmsteads,
Into the avenues of life
The hinterland'
Burst through the wicket',
The wily straits'
The slippery hillsides'
Burst into self'
Feeling'
Seeking' to go the farthest'
Yearning'
Keen for that audience
Of values,
For that inferno'
Set the whole world ablaze with it.
