An Unusual Place Called Home
One hot Summer's morn
I walked up a field of yellowed grass,
And just happened to hear
The sound of chirping as I did pass
By a post, weathered by time,
A hole in the metal did resound
With little chicks twittering
Seemingly stuck in that place I found.
Scratching my head, I stood
Pondering about what would be;
Would those little ones
Survive, and be set free?
Suddenly mother bird appeared,
And perched on a roof nearby
Calling to them repeatedly,
Urging them all to fly.
Soon I saw a fledgling appear
At the mouth of that hole,
He flexed his wings and jumped
Free from that metal pole.
Resting near his mother
On the gutter of the roof,
His maiden flight was a success,
He stood there as the proof!
I was amazed and privileged
To have witnessed such a sight;
To realize that a family of birds
Nested in a metal post despite
All weathers thrown their way -
A huge trial for any human home
Yet, these birds endured all,
And now freely in the skies do roam.
