Blue Poem by Samantha McKinnon

Blue

He was a cobra, I should've seen
The poison dripping from his smile
That he had disguised to taste like ice cream.
I should've noticed in the way one kiss made my head spin,
And my ears ring.
But the beauty held in his eyes
Dumbfounded me, and seized my heart.
Making him happy was never as tall an order
As keeping my sadness hidden from his view.
I run back when he begs for me to stay,
And only jog to safety when he yells
That I don't expose enough
Of the cloud he calls my heart.
I hold on to the love
That sometimes makes it hard to breathe -
Hard to find the desire to do so.
Each act of kindness he offers
Stings more once revoked.
Hate increased with each unfamiliar hand he holds,
Even if only for a second.
The snow falls and collects in my heart,
The hurt at its peak.
The music box seems stuck on repeat,
But the color changes to match his eyes:
Piercing blue.
People beg me to see
that ‘our' love is the poster child of disappointment,
No matter how appealing it seems
To my infatuated mind.
