Broke Down Downtown Poem by Albert Ahearn

Broke Down Downtown

A lifeless body laid face down
on the back alley wet sidewalk.
This time of night no ones around
especially now at three o’clock.
I’m here because my car broke down
Otherwise I wouldn’t be found dead
in this place. I hail from uptown.
Here, downtown, murder is widespread
Someone is always getting killed:
Prostitutes, druggies and the like
Thinking about it gives me chills.
Man! I wish I had my road bike
I’d flee this jungle battlefield.
For now, better keep my eyes peeled.
