Broken Poem by Uthman Ahmad

Broken

I used to play
as carelessly as a child
would play

Throwing things everywhere
shuttles, shoes, stones
at school and around the house

My house was made of glass screens
that protected my precious jewels
yet not a scratch would hit the screens

This autumn, i built
a house with blocks and concrete
to protect my jewels more

Only to pick up
pieces of my shattered jewels
lying on the floor

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
As a young boy growing into the world of men, I would play with my feelings carelessly falling in love with every beautiful face I came in contact with,
Putting my fragile heart out on the line unprotected.
Now with more years and experience, I protect my fragile heart by keeping it away from love, away from the shackles of pain
Only to find it broken into pieces afterwards.
