Burial Poem by Laurence Overmire

Burial

Digging for the first line
Can't seem to find it

In the mud and sludge of a
Deserted field

All presence of mind resisted
In blocked artery

Shovelfuls of thought turning over
The misplaced sod

Pieces of earth that don't cohere
Till bent in frustration

The knee goes down
The hand lets go

The sweat commingles with rain…
