But Not Alone Poem by Robert Goltz

But Not Alone

Rating: 5.0

Shells dropped, shells buried,
People running around in panic, worried.
Bullets zipped, bullets slammed,
Specific targets all are damned.

Hint of blood, sharks attacked,
In that little village in Iraq.
Ambush settled: smoking guns,
Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run.

After what? They did not know.
Valor, honor: they were bestowed
Eyes shut, judgment doomed,
Piercing bullets ripped on through.

Explosions echoed far and wide,
Brothers dead, mothers cried.
Soldiers died, bodies gibbed
Sounds of sorrow, death did live.

Exhausted lungs, destroyed hips,
Dried up tongue, and parched lips.
Tried to make the trek on foot,
Pain and fear, behind they put.

Brothers in blood, their friendship last,
Knew not their future, only past.
One thing, they sure did know,
They’d die there, but not alone.
