But Not Me. Poem by Nathaniel Baker-Lowe

But Not Me.

Memories fade, times change.
Repetitive, it seems; again
The daily cycle
Of the same old same.
You start to get comfortable.
But not me.

Over again, you shed your facade
Behind your walls, where nobody sees
What happens - or so you think.
The way you carry yourself, the way you talk:
You let it all show.
But not me.

You argue, you fight. You kick up dust,
You stir the pot, so to speak.
You push against those
Who push against you.
You rebel and speak your mind.
But not me.

Every day, always the same
Cycle continues, again and again
The slightest waver, a means to excite
Or make us afraid.
You shy away from the ordinary.
But not me.

You try to fit in. Be normal, even;
Nestle into the everyday.
You don't stand out,
you don't stray at all.
You're just another number.
But not me.
