Cafeteria Lunch Poem by William B. Deutscher

Cafeteria Lunch

Lunchtime in a cafeteria, the
Chatter of conversation between bites,
With multiple utterances joined
As one persistent, cacophonous din
That is relegated to background noise
By the solitary diner who reads
Her book and looks up now and then, smiling;
A man, approaching her tentatively,
Pauses briefly before walking away.
