Capitalism, Technology And Our Destruction Poem by Leonard Sims

Capitalism, Technology And Our Destruction

It’s a sad irony: technology that was meant to save us
Technology that was meant to give us hope and peace
Is giving us more troubles and gloomy future instead
People are losing faith in life and turning to hatred. Why?

Why are we creating more problems than we can solve?
Why are there so much conflicts and sufferings still?
Why are so many getting stressed, sick and insane?
Why have we become so wasteful and polluting?

Because we’ve entrusted so much to the capitalist ideology
We have allowed the capitalists control the whole economy
We have bestowed in them the power of technology
Our cultural and social values we let them to manipulate.

Can we trust capitalism to solve our mounting problems?
Can an ideology motivated by greed get rid of our mess?
Can people with unquenchable thirst for money help us?
Have we been so stupid? Or, we’ve become just like them.

Imperialism is history, slavery had long been abolished
One by one like dominoes dictators have fallen
Stealthily they’re coming back, this time with a vengeance
Disguised as capitalism, armed with high technology.

Today the tentacles of capitalism is gripping the whole world
In every cities their offices, banks and factories are established
To give jobs to people and make them work like modern slaves
Who are paid well enough but are so stressed and dehumanized.

In every corner of the world, stores and mega-malls are built
And filled with goods of all kinds, and create desires in us all
And make us feel as though we’re in a paradise of consumers
But this is just a way for the tentacles to suck all money back.

Capitalism, left uncheck, will destroy our humanity
It aims to concentrate power and wealth to the very few
And the rest of humanity subject to their manipulation
Its culture of consumerism had already swept the world.

Today the whole world is pretty much in uniform
Wearing clothes and using gadgets made by global corporations
And every now and then models are changed and advertised
The people salivate and are tricked to buying them.

The capitalist way to solve our problems is to produce more
Sure, it realizes people are stressed and bored and unhappy
They can be made alive again by flooding them with goods
For pleasures and conveniences they will be addicted to.

The capitalist way to solve our problems is unlimited growth
Which will devour all resources of the earth in shortest time
Consumers will be prosperous and capitalists super rich
But the ultimate price to pay- environmental disaster.

The capitalist way to solve our problems is create jobs for everyone
They don’t care if those jobs are meaningless and dehumanizing
They don’t care even if we all become slaves of technology
They don’t care because their only goal is to accumulate wealth.

But, how can we not realize the sins of the capitalists?
Exploitations, manipulations, and wasteful consumption
Why do we still admire the rich and condone their habits?
Because we’re hoping, someday, it will be our turn to be rich.
