Cats And Owls. Poem by Miki Byrne

Cats And Owls.

Cats and Owls.

It was a night for cats and owls.
One to slink and one to soar.
Both with eyes deep and round
That searched for prey
In creatures of the forest floor.

It was a night for hedgehogs too.
To scramble with their spines a-prickle.
Shuffling through a leafy much
And small wet noses scenting sharp
The earthworms deep and woodlice brittle.

It was a night for the moon to rise
And smile across a velvet sky.
To lay its silver sheen on all
And cause the dogs to lift their muzzles
And howl with deep ancestral joy.

It was a night for boughs to dip.
To fling their arms beneath the wind.
To whip and crack in sudden squalls
And scatter petals pale as snow
To welcome in the gentle warmth of spring.
