Circles Poem by Chatem Mercedes

Circles

What are we all chasing?
do any of us actually know?
the ones who ponder the answer too long are lost.
the ones who answer too fast are clueless.
and the ones who do not care found it once but lost it.
are you running after an enigma subconsciously programmed-
into your brain as a child?
or chasing a goal that's main objective is to keep you distracted?
keep you from feeling too much because no one likes to feel
too much.
are you a moth attracted to a burning light that you'll never touch?
or keeping yourself sedated because any resemblance of happiness
is just a cruel reminder of disappointment.
the person out every night with new people because silence
hurts their soul.
engaging in reckless behaviour because even feeling scared
and ashamed is still better then not feeling at all.
we're all chasing ourselves and we don't realize it.
like a dog in circles who eventually catches his tail-only to yelp.
a baby in a mirror babbling away with no sense of self.
we're our parents children and hope personified slowly-
burning away each day and settling for life just like them.
you hear the traveler boast about what they've seen on the other side
of the earth. what's it all for? you return still lost and closed minded.
