Circles - Poem by Andy Brookes

the sun rises
full of eastern promise.

gray light sifting clouds
cold, ridged, ruddy hills,
to blue,
which look down,
pitying poor mortals
such brief swift lives.

we run like mountain streams
over rough ground
grinding the pebbles
of our allotted time
smoothing out wrinkles in death.

the heavens await
ardent in anticipation
for another batch of sacrifices
to the jealous God.
spirits blown away
to rest as dust under his feet.

blood red, the western sky
holds no promise,
just the loneliness of the dying.
