Coffee For You Poem by Rodney Reeves

Coffee For You

Rating: 4.0

I am an abandoned cup of coffee
left behind by a lover, gone on
to others, forgetting my heat
and the richness of my taste.

I am full-bodied, morning coffee,
left behind on the kitchen counter
where I woke her with moist kisses
and gave her a smile to start her day.

I was piping hot when she set me down
left behind to cool after only a sip or two,
sweetened by her lips to my brim
then forgotten as a disposable thing.

I am a strong, straight, American cup of coffee,
left behind, perhaps too strong in this age of
latte-sipping, cappuccino drinking pretenders,
my plainness and simple tastes passe' to the uppercrust.

I am still a cup of coffee, ready to be reheated,
left behind, but still here for you, should you choose
to pick me up again, warm me with your hands,
embrace my flavor again and drink me till all is gone.

Rodney, this is a good idea....'I am a...cup of coffee.' I would either choose to be talking to the lover in every stanza, as left behind by you...rather than by a lover...or make the whole thing impersonal. The last stanza goes to 'you' and then it becomes suddenly personal. That was bothersome to me. Still though, your subject is creative and I want to read more of your poetry. Raynette
