Conception Of A Distant Being Poem by Peter Timothy McQueeny

Conception Of A Distant Being

Rating: 5.0

For thirty seconds now you have…
Just enough time to slip…
Out of…
My mind reels and bucks the notion of you
Your step is music to my eyes
Your curving of mathematical precision
Chiseled in flesh
My overstuffed grey fireside mass has conjured you into being
Rectify you with my sense of self
Succulent yet beyond reach
Because your fingerprints aren’t in any file anywhere
Your driver’s license was never issued
Your birth certificate revoked
I remain quietly awed
Filled nonetheless with presence
Your 340th strand of hair is slightly lighter than the 341st
This eye is just a tad brighter than that eye
That I see without myopic squinting
From your lips come nothing but good
Life seems to flow up from the earth, through your soul and out your mouth
In the form of kisses
Or beautiful thoughts
O’ beautiful thought, that you are
Skin into skin
That will remain forever unburned
Unlike the tip of the cigarette I hold between two fingers
As I raise my glass to you
Because WE, my dear, do not exist
We are not plain agents, but one continuous being, stretched through time
And space
And love
The final frontier

And me?
Whoa, me.
WHOA is me.
Jack of all trades, master of none
Jack of all opinions, believer of none
At once totally convinced of everything and skeptically denying everything
Trying to resist the temptation to be categorical
On any level
And…
Here You Come
Crying like lily white crystal, soft as the petals
Fragile as broken glass
And I know why you don’t exist
Because I haven’t been the heater on a cold winter’s night
Because I haven’t been that funny guy I met the other day
Drenched out of the scene, waiting here, hiding in my words
Whoa is certainly me

Erupt from my mind like fair Athena from Zeus
Become manifest
Let me hear the notes of your movement
See the painting that is your voice
Observe the masterpiece of my imagination incarnate in you
Study the calculus of your body
Reduce it to paper, the paper to ash
And put you back where you belong
And then I’ll see the world around me
