Could We Live On As Trees? Poem by Sumitra Kumar

Could We Live On As Trees?

If we could plant a tree and give it our name
And bond with the tree by nurturing the same
Would we not never die and become immortal?
Every tree would bear a name, have a story to tell
And we continue to interact as trees for ever.....
Jostling for space under the sun, but fight never
Or demand more than our true need
Nature and animals transporting our seed
Of sustainability, with an invisible smile
As our deep roots keep the land rich and fertile
Bringing rains of love, preventing erosion of values
Housing birds and strangers, service in all its hues
That could not be mustered when ‘alive'
Bearing fruits of labour in all flavours
Tolerate one another better than when ‘alive'
And serve mankind better than when ‘alive'
A welcome transformation that will come to stay
‘Death' bestowing peace, the true wealth
That was kept away for some reason when ‘alive'

The tree is our grave that our kids will come to visit
On our birthdays' to pay homage and simply sit
To watch their kids play in our shade
And thus we touch many more lives
With a broader perspective
We could even have several graves
That may be our new homes or addresses
That was so desired when ‘alive'
Just plant that many more when ‘alive'
And voila!kids can drop in anywhere, anytime
To say ‘Hello' just another time
Pray they shall not leave a wreath but plant another tree
And nurture it in their life time, watch it as much
And be proud of the the legacy that has been left behind
And thus we multiply
The more the merrier and healthier
For the world after...
Trees having human associations
A welcome growth in population
Of more humans as trees than humans themselves
Giving more oxygen that was so craved for when ‘alive'
To thus oust the threat of global warming
But warming up human hearts to a peaceful world
Where lives are not reduced by guns and missiles
Buts it's only cool to live and most cool to naturally die!
And still live on!
