Crystalized Shrapnel Poem by Thomas Thompson

Crystalized Shrapnel

July 20,2013

Crystallized Shrapnel

This evening while helping with supper
The jar of salsa slipped from my hand
Shattering the crystal bowl near my feet

You know
The bowl the ferrets ate from
Every morning as they made their run

Salsa exploding everywhere
Before I knew it
Crystallized shrapnel gleaming starkly in the red mass

I froze inside
Frantically looking for a place to hide
My arms crazily waving sharply up and down

Moving quickly away
Before I realized where I was
With no place to hide run take cover

Hoping no one would see
The frightening desperation that consumed me
My mind numb my body exhausted

Those around knowing something was wrong
As weariness sets in and I feel myself retreating
Wanting to be alone yet cannot stand solitude

And knelt to clean the mess
The shattered shards like glistening bone
Reminisce of a war long ago

I thought I had put away

That haunts me still
