Deployment Poem by William McGehee

Deployment

We said goodbye once more today.
Her love now seems so far away.
So far away as cooling rains,
Are longed for on the desert plains.

I just put boots on ground today.
The bird out seems so far away.
So far away as home to me,
Out there beyond the farthest sea.

I lost my faith in God today.
His power seems so far away.
As far away as endless night,
Looming, brooding with its might.

I felt the grip of fear today.
Its rigor took my breath away.
It tore away my mask of pride,
And pulled out what I hid inside.

I saw the face of death today.
He came to take my soul away,
So I made a deal to do his will
And he binds me by it still.
