Desert Boots Poem by Dan McGonagle

Desert Boots

Far from home they travel

To fight in a foreign land

Not for riches nor for glory

Just to give a helping hand

This band of happy warriors

Drawn from every town and street

Heading off to war in the desert

Army boots upon their feet

Young men who leave their wives behind

Parents filled with pride

Friends and family cheering them

Keeping faith inside

Then home the warriors will return

They have many a tale to tell

Of courage and survival

In that hot and dusty hell

Some of their number will remain

In memories of the past

For they gave their lives on foreign soil

So that freedoms reign might last

Spare a thought for those who lost their lives

Don't say you don't give two hoots

Remember... in a foreign field

Lies a pair of desert boots.
