Dan McGonagle Poems

Tenement buildings falling to bits

Victims of precision hits
...

When faced with the powers of Darkness
When evil consumes the weak
Its time to prepare for battle
But there are weapons you must first seek
...

Don't listen to those who say you can't
You can be what you want to be
Don't listen to the voices of discontent
I won't let that happen to me
...

Why is it that the majority of people who read my writes cannot take a minute or so to comment on what they have read?
Is my writing of such a poor standard that it deserves no comment at all?
To those of you who have already commented on my writes...
...

Love rises like a phoenix from the ashes of loneliness

Powering the world with eternal emotions
...

The sun is shining bright today
No clouds are in my sky
The birds are warbling sweetly
Saying hello as they pass by
...

I watched you sleeping just last night
The way I did in years gone by
You were my infant son back then
Now you are an adult...six feet high
...

What could be a more natural sight
A child feeding from his mother in broad daylight
Why is it viewed as a scene of disgust
What harm can ensue from that bond of trust
...

Bless this house and all therein

May Love invade our home
...

A tall dark stranger rode into town
Left his horse at the livery stable
Booked a room for the night at the drovers inn
Ate a meal at a dim corner table
...

I remember Granny telling me about my Uncle Phil
He was a paratrooper known as 'The screaming skull'
Definitely the kind of man I looked up to with pride
I wanted to be just like him with strength and guts inside
...

No one can see his pain or its scope
There's none can sense his pride
He once was young and full of hope
Now he's tired...and just wants to hide
...

When your Mother placed you in my arms
My heart swelled up with pride
I cradled you close to my chest
Held you snugly by my side
...

Parking the car at the end of the road
I check the store fronts on my beat
Walking along with a spring in my step
Doc Martens hugging my feet
...

Deep in the heart of a cavern
By the side of a fiery lake
A dragon kept watch on its precious egg
Waiting as long as its hatching might take
...

Twin beams of Light penetrate the night air
Reminding us all of the towers that stood there
Recalling an icon...a glimpse of the past
The grief of a nation...the shadow it cast
...

There amidst the virgin forest
To an island in the lake
Sailed the warrior Standing Bear
Rippling Waters his bride to take
...

In the stillness of the night
When everyone's asleep
I sit here at my monitor
Thinking long and deep
...

Here lies a fallen angel
With wings all bloodied and torn
Caught in the violent aftermath
Of an ancient war reborn
...

Today is a very special day
As both of you start a new life
It begins with both of you single
And ends with a Husband and Wife
...

Dan McGonagle Biography

57 year old man from Scotland, father of 5 and grandad to Chloe Emma. I have lived a varied and interesting life to date... followed a number of various career paths over the last few decades. Now retired due to injury. Started writing at the age of 50 after going through a personal crisis... discovered I had an aptitude for writing in rhyme. The Best Poem Of Dan McGonagle

The Blitz

Tenement buildings falling to bits

Victims of precision hits

Sirens wailing, people running

Smoke and darkness, engines gunning

Antiaircraft guns are blazing

Towards the sky the bullets strafing

A distant rumble just like thunder

Another street is torn asunder

Bodies lying on the road

Families left with no abode

Among the rubble pets are lying

Some in shock, others dying

Despite it all a sense of calm

People sing a well known psalm

Thanking God for their survival

Whilst waiting on the Sun's arrival

The spirit of them all unbroken

Words like defeat are never spoken

Courage born of toil and sweat

Pride in everyone you met

A town rebuilt by men of worth

Regarded as the salt of the earth

Rising from the ashen pits

Created by the Clydebank blitz
