Do We Really Matter? Poem by Ali Rahimi

Do We Really Matter?

Rating: 3.0

We live our days with cries and laughter,
Just a spot in the titanic universe, that’s bitter,
We are born to be a savior, a tycoon, or a leader,
Parents’ desire to be a defeater, a fantastic winner,
Impose strict control, harsh discipline, massive pressure,
So too does the ruthless teacher,
Warding off their failures, an achiever a glorious accomplisher,
Yes, the warrior mother, seeking self-glory, a draconic controller,
Fighter father in need of narcissistic victories, just like a commander,
Projectification of children, success junkies, in any manner,
Children are the horses, and parents the charioteer,
Quickly climbing the social ladder,
Amazing successful engineer, lawyer or doctor,
We go through hardships, ordeals even hunger,
Or horrible diseases, Ebola, mental disorders, cancer,
To satisfy their unquenchable thirst, we are their ego booster,
But some of us turn out to be shameful losers,
End up in jail, as a killer, hooker, drug abuser, a radicalized murderer,
Do we really matter?
Do we really matter?
Behind us, thousands of years of life, we are just a short chapter,
In the vast book of creation, universe, just a miserable barker,
The underdog of the whole gigantic galaxy, a trivial blister,
Future is uncertain, dark, even bleaker,
Days fast forward, surprised, we just look at the calendar,
Human fate I just can’t decipher,
Death embraces us all, with no mercy, like a brutal bomber,
Crashes us all, Christian, Muslim, Jew or non-believer,
The dangerous, unavoidable butcher, the invisible ambusher,
We all receive the kiss of death, remember,
Can’t escape its sharp jaws, yes brother, yes sister,
We are all walking in the shadow of a dead man’s dreams, a blind-folded dancer,
Confined to the darkness of the cave of ignorance and anger,
We shall all kiss the dust, turn into dust, that’s the sad answer,
What makes our lives worthy of living?
Do we really matter?
