Do-Si-Do Poem by Laurence Overmire

Do-Si-Do

So many people I've met and lost
And they of me
Faces occasionally resurface from the backlog
of memory
Perhaps a word or two, a touch, a feeling
Survives
A flash of time and place
A scent that lingers like a flower
Once blooming, refusing to close
Sometimes the smile remains, more often the tear
The chance of life so quick so rare
So difficult to grasp, so easy to let go.

And in the end, what will it all mean?
If anything.

You want a happy ending to this poem, don't you?
You think if you read long enough, you'll find it
A way to take the trouble and make it all worthwhile
Maybe you will and maybe you won't
But the last line isn't mine at all
It's not even my poem
It's yours
Whatever you want it to be
What do you think you'll write?
The last line, the very last line
And will it be enough to pass on the dream?
