Dr Johnsons Rules? Poem by Ray Savill

Dr Johnsons Rules?

Rules obviate faults! Never! Confer beauties.
The implications for poetic art
Dawns on most poets from the very start,
To confer beauty is his first duty.

Rules of language blossom each generation
New words add, to the communication cord
Should we reject Shakespeareans word hoard?
Does his sonnets acclaim just vexation?

He dared breach iambic meter laws
Even fell foul of pentameter flaws.
But dare we state, eighteen is not art
For not being absolute in every part.

Unlike children, Rules should be seen, not heard
To reduce arts integrity by mouth and word.
