Elegy For A Quiet Flame Poem by Sandrani Kichenama Utim

Elegy For A Quiet Flame

She came as a harbinger of light,
a beautiful fairy upon the earth,
caught in between two worlds of moonlight.

Standing tall like an oak,
her words were nectar to the soul.
Armored in love, yet eyes that soak,
a nurturer of hearts, a falling star whole.

She was a woman of quiet fire,
a healer of hearts, a scholar of grace.
The mother I admire, I deeply desire
to feel again her warm embrace.

Like a dandelion, rare and free,
one in a million, she bloomed with ease.
A sudden light, she left abruptly,
yet her soul still moves within my dreams.

My heart aches for her silently,
her absence written in every breeze.
Irreplaceable, indomitable,
she remains a living faith within me.

Living in quietude, she held her grace,
immovable in devotion, full of gratitude.
She was my living scripture, my sacred place,
my mentor in life's endurance and truth.

''How to cure my belly aches? ''she'd say,
and answer softly, 'arrowroots and care. '
A healer in her own simple way,
a fortress of love beyond compare.

My mother, my roots, my guiding sky,
my 'déesse' wrapped in earthly form.
Forever she lives within my eyes,
and I, the stargazer through every storm.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This free verse poem is a tribute to my late mother, who was my absolute backbone. She passed away in a tragic car accident while crossing the road, and her loss has caused the deepest emotional damage of my life—I feel as though my whole world has crashed. Yet, my heart tells me she is in a better place; she has soared high, completely free from earthly burdens. She worked incredibly hard her whole life until her late 60s, and she lost her life in that tragic accident while on her way to be of service to someone else. This poem is dedicated to her, the one who remains my roots. I wish I could tell her how much I love her and how terribly I miss her. I am forever grateful for the immense love and sacrifices she gave me until her very last breath.
