Empty Room Poem by Ron Willis

Empty Room

god won't rain
when i need her to,
no place to hide a tear
on a saturday afternoon
and i'm thinkin
i'm almost out of
goodbyes.
songs
in my head
aren't all alibies,
some are just make believe
like the ones i thought
were you leaving,
'cause you're not the kind
to leave
but about a thousand
empty rooms later
and i only know
i never knew anything,
just as wrong
as every sad song
i ever sang
in this old
too long ago heart of mine.
