There once was a heart hiding out in a pillar of stone,
peering out through a crack at the world, it felt sad and alone.
There were so many things that it longed to partake of, and yet,
it couldn't escape from the stone and it couldn't forget.
The heart hid its face and it wept
for a promise that wouldn't be kept.
Then it howled in its fury and rage
raining impotent blows on its cage.
But the pillar of stone stood unmoved by the torrent of tears
and the heart learned at last the hard lesson of so many years.
With eyes that were blinded from weeping the tears of despair
it was no longer able to see what it wanted out there.
Cut off from temptation's sweet lure,
it gave thanks for its overdue cure.
Now, resigned to its fate it could see
that no way would it ever be free.
So, now there's a heart hiding out in a pillar of stone
who can't see what it's missing, but still it feels strangely alone.
The blank stare of darkness has banished ambition, and yet,
though the heart can't escape from its prison, it can't quite forget.
