Epitaph For Kiki Poem by Giovanni Rabito

Epitaph For Kiki

My cat is dead ran over by a car
this morning
la mia Kiki I loved her so much
one hour or two a day only
she was going out in the morning
she liked just a couple of laps
around the block or a couple of leaps
in a neighbour's backyard
never too far away
I had just to call her: Kiki!
and she would just come in
so happy to be home again
to sleep on the bed
purring for a stroke
enjoying the long day
the night at home
to go out again next morning
for an hour or two only
she is dead now
no more
I will not see her again
she died instantly! A neighbour told me
the one who took her to the Vet
uselessly
the same person who rang my bell
to bring the news to me
like a policeman
I am sorry, your cat is dead!
she said
ring Amy the Vet
she will tell you more!
She didn't suffer
told me the vet
she arrived here dead!
What you want to do with the body?
She asked then
So I paid 50 dollar over the phone
with the American express
to have her cremated
and I burst to tears
like a little child.
