Epitaph In A Farmer's Field Poem by Laurence Overmire

Epitaph In A Farmer's Field

My life is a sigh
That lingers in the trees
Above my tombstone

The grass grows here
Without ever being shorn
The weeds comfortably entwined

Along the cool edge of marble
The shadows lengthen with
The downing of the sun

To those who chance
Upon these words
Etched in mortal stone

Take a moment to reflect
Listen to the heartbeat stopped
The short time before

Your own coffin is cut.
