Escape Poem by Benita Oseremi Obajuobalo

Escape

Today, the sky is a dark blanket
but at the side, laid a circle bright
it shone wildly
as though it would set the old paths on fire.
It was dark but I could see my bare feet hitting every stone and grass.
I was out of breath, not out of light,
running out of the village in just wrappers and a skinned bottle.
Time had not been my ally for I had to leave without my lover,
else I would be burnt at the stake for merging lips with another woman.
