Ethan's Poem For Jane (Other Wise Untitled)

Ethan pushed her on the swing,
as she hummed some ghostly lullaby
lost in a world different from the one they both were in,
one made real to her only through memory

'She knows not what she does to me,
only what she can feel inside.
Alone in the silence, although weeping
she is beautiful and I ache for her.
Fragile yet strong, she stands when she must,
but cries when she shouldn't.
My heart is captured by her alone.
And as she stares, her eyes become like windows,
my reflection is shown to me in their deep, sad pools.
My heart is in my throat, of no surprise to me I can assure you.
She knows not when she suffers, her pain is mine to share.
But am I sad that I have lost my heart to her? '

The swing had stopped and she turned to look at him,
tears on her lashes, her throat tightened and then she said,

'No. I am sad that I do not have hers.'

She wiped away a tear, 'You wrote that for English in April.'

He looked at her now, as he had looked at her ever since
he'd been a new student at her refined high school.
His eyes were warm and his fingers ached to touch
her hair that was blowing in the wind.

'Right you are, ' he said to her.
'It was was after I'd first laid my eyes on you, Jane.'
