'Fatherless While You Lived' Poem by Reba Grace

'Fatherless While You Lived'

Daddy, why do you not love us?
You make us feel weak and hungry,
All these years destroyed, unlived, suffered.
You make us beg even for the tiniest bit.

Daddy, you brought me into life,
But you never let me live.

Who are you?
A father shaped like Satan, or a Satan shaped like Father?
Every time my eyes shed tears, it was always you who made me feel dead.

And when I am no longer here—
I take the authority to shed or mourn for me.
You, who never loved me in life,
have no right to grieve my leaving.
I do not allow you to cry for what you never held dear.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Author's Note: This poem is for the quiet places within us, where the words we need to say stay locked away. It's my first attempt at sharing something so personal, and I hope it reaches someone who needs to hear it. Sometimes we're not heard in the way we should be but through poetry, we can start to feel seen.
