Finding The Perfect Flower Poem by Eli J Tod

Finding The Perfect Flower

i had always thought a couple in love
were people who drifted among the clouds
and saw the world
in rosy hues.
flowers jumped out at them
and love songs
spoke to their souls.
they never fully saw anyone
but each other.
they could be completely amused
for hours on end
simply gazing in each other's eyes.

when forced apart
they'd be
melancholy
and
teary eyed
thinking of nothing
but their
love.
their body's basic needs would be ignored
(such as eating and sleeping)
to focus more fully
on
yearning
for the other
to be near them again.

going by these shady guidelines
i am
not
in love.
no, i cannot be
diagnosed with love.
if with anything,
than a case of lust.

with him
my feet
still strike the ground.
when a cloud
covers the sun
it is natural for me
to call my world
gray.

flowers call to me
but then
they always have.
i call this,
simply
in love
with life.

most sappy love songs
make me gag.
every beautiful face
that walks by
invites
a good
long look.

his eyes are beautiful
i have to admit.
not to be vain,
if i stare into them
for too long
i only see myself
alone and afraid
upside-down.

away from him
i breathe easier
and relish
in my
freedom,
eating sloppily
if i want to.
i sleep well
dreaming of
sunlit summer days
to come
where i walk
in solitude
finding
the perfect
flower.
