Fire Poem by Mary Champion

Fire

Desperate refugees inexpertly navigated the shallow river that had once watered the shored-up banks.
They passed close by piles of dry white lumber
destined to blacken in the approaching flames.

Fleeing black bears lumbered towards the shore
scrambling into the water
as all other paths closed behind them.
The fire will blacken the flesh of the fallen
and the sun will whiten their bones.
