First & Lasts Poem by Robin Rodriguez

First & Lasts

Knees trembling, hands shaking,
You smiled and the world faded.
Your eyes, so piercing, twinkled
With a mischievous light
That could never be snuffed.
You saluted me and turned away;
The first time we met.

You were strong and caring,
Holding me so tenderly
While I cried.
Never expected the harshness
Of your answer, or the brutal
Truth that came with it.
Then hugged me close until I slept.
The first time I cried

The way your lips twitched
When you tried not to smile
At my tearing rage.
Then laughed outright
When I tripped over my bag;
Then kissed my knee to make it better;
The first time I knew I'd fallen.

The way you stared into my eyes
Daring me to deny. Silence.
Surprise darkening, intensifying
Your silver-blue.
That heartbreaking smile,
That devastating kiss;
The day I doomed myself.

You gave me your jacket
Because of my slight shiver.
We gazed up at the stars
While tears blurred my sight.
The day you told me
You were leaving.

You came back for visits
Giving me a piece of paradise
And taking my heart.
Now gone are those days
Knowing the future
We painted for ourselves
Is lost, never to be regained.

I'll always be yours;
You'll always be mine.
Let's face the truth
The bitter reality that you and I
Can never be anymore.

You'll always have a part
Of my heart, my soul,
But I can't put myself
On hold anylonger,
So I have to let you go.
I love you.
