On the broad ocean of uncertainty,
where Hope's faint beacons are my only guide,
tossed, by storm and tempest on ev'ry side,
against the rough rocks of adversity,
I feel waves of despair roll over me.
There is no sure harbour where I can hide,
even the dim flames of Hope have died.
Then, one bright dawn breaks and, at last, I see
landfall - a sweet atoll of happiness.
Here, I can rest a while and savour too
the joyous welcome of this blessed place.
No fear or pain to blight its pleasantness,
until, too soon, the angry seas surge through
and those wild currents claim my life once more.
