Forfeit Poem by B. V. Dahlen

Forfeit

I'm barren
gourd rattling
hollow
sucked dry
loose grit blowing
across
a sterile dune
brittle as
late autumn leaves
ground underfoot
dispirited
as a fog enshrouded
oily sea.
I hear
a moaning,
pealing roar,
screaming
stay away,
stay away,
shoals and ledges
piercing jagged
soul rending barricades
waiting,
crouching,
reaching
shatter me
and draw me down
to numbing silence
dismal and done
