From My Understanding (Until Further Notice) Poem by Charlie Bain

I don't understand
How people can be so cruel to each other
I don't understand
Being ridiculed for something you can't control
I really don't understand
How people can be so foolish
Or why they don't seek advice from the wise
And I don't understand
How life can be so simple
Yet so complicated
Why are we told that our time is limited
And to live like tomorrow will never come
Only to be told to slow down and smell the roses
Whenever we turn around?
But I do understand
That you have to play out the cards you've been dealt
I understand
That for someone to win
Someone else had to lose
I understand
Why life has such a bittersweet flavor
And I understand
That we will never see a day without death
Until there is nothing left to die
