Getting Over It Poem by tola kale

Getting Over It

It was beating just fine
It was feeling just fine
No scars, No pains
It had the best defenses
It let no one through
He made it through
Breaking down my defenses
Making a home for himself
I could not make him leave
I gave in
We had something
Undefined, strange, a first
I freaked, I wriggled but I hung on
I thought maybe…..
He is different
At least I thought he was
He’s gone
My head knows this
My heart refuses to accept it
I can’t explain it
It’s beating slower
It’s feeling weaker
The pain is unreal
I can’t feel it
Yet it is excruciating
I should have protected it better
I should have looked harder
Too open, too expressive
Never again
I’m gonna rebuild
New defenses
It’s done
Over with
