Ghost Poem by Kierra Mickelson

Ghost

Ghost
The rain is falling outside the window,
But all I can see is your tears.
Cold and foreign against your cheek,
The first time in so many years.

I reach out but you can’t see me,
I’m gone yet I am still here.
The pain on your face is haunting,
I want to have you near.

To you I am now a memory,
Our joy is replaced with the pain.
Your smile is lost inside you,
Can’t you hear me calling your name?

Out story is sad but true nonetheless,
A tragedy we couldn’t foresee.
The day it happened is burned in my mind,
My last complete memory.

I remember the feel of your hand in mine,
Walking together our problems all naught.
The smile on your face was the last one I’d see,
Then there came the blast of a shot.

As I fell to the ground I told you to run,
The blackness was already setting in.
Despite all my efforts you sat by my side,
And stayed there until the end.

Now you need me and I can’t be there,
I’d hold you but you wouldn’t feel.
I’m gone but you are still here,
And one day I know you will heal.

The rain continues to fall,
Your tears coming shorter, and few.
You close your eyes and drift off to sleep,
And I’m still here watching you.

You’re stronger than me, this I am sure,
Someday you will find what you need.
You’ll find someone to be there for you,
No matter how much I wish it was me.
