The past lingers in the corners of my day,
soft-footed, silent, yet impossible to ignore.
It whispers through familiar streets,
tugs at laughter that has grown brittle,
and shadows the warmth of moments I try to claim.
Faces and voices rise unbidden,
old mistakes and tender joys alike,
pressing against the pulse of now,
reminding me that time has not erased
what it promised would fade.
Even in brightness, I feel its weight—
the echo of love, the ache of loss,
the things I cannot undo, the words
I cannot unsay.
The present becomes a fragile place,
haunted by memory, haunted by regret,
and I walk it cautiously,
never free, always remembering,
never able to arrive fully
because the past walks beside me,
holding me in its shadow.
