Gods Poem by Alejandro Torres

Gods

We were learning to make fire
We were children pretending to be adults
We were mortals pretending to be Gods
She was a Goddess pretending to be mortal
And the adults who fell for her
In sincerity were nothing more
Than children
So how it came to pass
That so fortunate a one could become
Is the same as a star being reborn
First elements and dust
Like bone and flesh
Then moments and memories
An outer shell to protect their inner being
But along those lines
When she’d grace you with a smile
And make you fall for miles
You’d never know
You were falling into a catastrophe
We were children trying valiantly
To be Gods
No one knew us better
Than we thought we knew ourselves
But along the ways of women
Sure disaster awaited those
Who bid their time
And like a star
When the time was right
You were out of it
So a fortunate one indeed
Burned out
Like the dying embers
Of a raging fire
She was the Goddess of love
Tainted with a mortal coil
Of being a child
The only one
Who could put out a blaze
With a word
And the cosmic child
Did what she thought was best
Doing what she could with her humanity
To forget her Goddess
But she wasn’t as fortunate
As she once thought she was
To hold the eye of a beholder
But time passed
And Goddesses came and went
And the Goddess Child returned
With fire
In the time it took the star to regroup
Its mortal being
Her Goddess had learned to smile
Not so devastatingly
Not so mortally
And so a path ready for forging
Was left open
For two distinctly different enigmas
But human frailties
Always did what could be done
To dictate the lives
Of children
Learning to play with fire
Learning to be
Gods
