Goodbye Poem by David Smart

Goodbye

Walking through a broad and leafy way,
I'd never thought to walk this way again.
This was the place you came to me to say
‘Goodbye' before you climbed aboard your train.
We walked along this sunlit avenue,
My heart for you with love was wholly filled
And then I heard those dreaded words from you
And all my hopes and dreams were surely killed.
Remembering that day I can't but cry.
I never wished again to see this place
But once again I find I'm walking by
The very spot where last I saw your face.

I realise, at last, you did not care.
I'm less to you than sunlight in your hair.
