Gray Poem by Gabriella Bigness

Gray

Rating: 5.0

there are times in films
all hope is lost and your heart is beating
the protagonist is losing and your clawing at the screen
trying to reach out
because the answer is so simple but so far
but even though you feel desperate in that moment
you know that the hero will always win
and the villain will always lose
just as you know the sun will come up
and the moon will follow
i think why we fixate on media
isn't because of the amazing stories
but because of the fact we will always know the outcome
of the fact there will always be a clear cut ending
or a one-size fits all solution
when we find solace in the known
it takes off the pressure of the things we fear
we fear so much and live for so little
the constants in our lives changing so quickly in a single motion
in films there will always be black and white
there will always be a right and wrong answer
a yes or no
a hero or a villain
but real life isn't like that
there are no villains and no hero's
no clear-cut solution to any given problem
there is only us
we stand in the gray
we stand in the unknown
we stand in the constant confusion of the changing world
we stand with the death and the grief of what could have been
we stand while others are falling and fighting
we stand because we've known nothing else
the gray is the battleground between morals
the gray is the color of the clouds and the sky and the ocean
the gray is the blanket you hid under when you were 6
the gray is your family and your friends
the gray is the color of your first car at 18 and the gray is the color of the casket you were buried in.
the gray is the static that lulls you to sleep at night.
we fixate on fantasy worlds we cannot have merely because it can be perceived as something new.
something we long for and love.
but no matter what,
we will still
always be
gray.
