Grit (A Retort To Blm) Poem by Maurice Kemp

Grit (A Retort To Blm)

1. Toss aside your signs and pick up your gait
2. The line is long for those pleading for gain
3. Yet grit can't be defeated by mere hate

4. Critical words carry ungodly weight
5. Sore. We rise up against our source of pain
6. Toss aside your signs and pick up your gait

7. Precious ideas may sit like unclaimed freight
8. Overlooked. We squall they're produced in vain
9. Yet grit can't be defeated by mere hate

10. Foul deeds of the dead mark living men's slate
11. Condemned. They are made to feel soiled and stained
12. Toss aside your signs and pick up your gait

13. Sweet dreams sour with doubt at a whirlwind rate
14. As 'we're not privileged' bores in our brain
15. Yet grit can't be defeated by mere hate

16. If it is progress we desire, why wait?
17. Do far more with far less. Wax. Do not wane.
18. Toss aside your signs and pick up your gait
19. Yet grit can't be defeated by mere hate

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Being African-American and a member of the generation-X has not aided my understanding of the aims and methods of protest being waged by mostly members of the generation-Y - the Millennials. I have compared the challenges faced by earlier generations with the challenges faced by generation-Y. I opine the challenges are as different as day and night. Earlier generations dealt with real obstructions such as unequal protection of the law, unequal opportunities for education and financial advancement. Today, the disadvantages are mostly psychological which I opine could be easily overcome with personal grit. But no one seems to advocate this sort of thinking nowadays. And so, I decided to set it down in poetically.
