He Had It All Poem by Daniel Northcutt

He Had It All

I had this job once.
I was so young.
I could still look forward.
Not like now,
Now, I can only look back.
Anyway, there was this guy there,
He was so popular with everyone,
I hated him for that.
He was one of those types that have it all together;
Everything I mean.
One day he says to me,
After his date with the girl I liked,
'Dancing is a vertical expression of your horizontal desires.'
Wow, this guy had it all.
That quote always stuck with me.
In part because he had just danced with the girl I wanted.
In part because it was so damn smooth,
In part because I never really did understand it,
And it was that lack of understanding,
That involuntary ignorance,
That so came to define my life.
