He Knows - Poem by Chandra Hohmann

His daddy comes home aching from lifting heavy boxes all day
The doctors say he needs a break but there’s bills to be paid
And his momma’s crying again
His sister, they say, is a crackhead

He says
I’m a tired of living this way
This paycheck to paycheck crap
Cause its balls to the walls every damn day
It’s balls to the walls for every little thing
And I’m a tired of living this way

Ain’t no money for food
Or the electricity
Not even any for a little bit of weed

And he knows and he knows and he knows
He knows in his heart it’s hopeless

And his parents, they drink to forget
And to drown out his sisters screams
Yeah, they drink to forget
Yeah, they drink to drown out the screams

And he knows and he knows and he knows
And he knows in his heart it’s hopeless

And no matter how hard he tries
It’s balls to the walls every damn day
It’s balls to the walls for every little thing

And it ain’t no way to live
It ain’t no way to be

But his momma she’s a crying
And his daddy’s leg is aching
And his sisters calling people up
Everyone they know
Asking for the money
To get one last fix
Just one little fix

And he knows and he knows and he knows
He knows in his heart it’s hopeless

And he don’t know what to do
He don’t know how to change it
Cause it’s balls to the walls every damn day
It’s balls to the wall for every little thing

And his momma
And his daddy
Just go on drowning away the days
And he tries and he tried

And he knows and he knows and he knows
He knows in his heart it’s hopeless

And it’s balls to the walls for every little thing
Balls to the walls
Balls to the walls
Balls to the walls
For every little thing
Every damned day

And he knows and he knows and he knows…

Ain’t no money for food
Or the electricity
Or even a little bit of weed

And he knows and he knows and he knows
In his heart he knows it’s hopeless
