Heart In Iraq Poem by Charlie Savannah Watson

Heart In Iraq

It seems just like yesterday we were laughing and singing our favorite song,

Now 2 years have gone by, its been way too long.

The day you packed your bags, i held tightly to your dog tags.

I begged and pleeded you to stay, but you still inteeded to walk away.

Kissed me goodbye, left me there standing in the airport to cry.

Watched you get on the airplane with my heart in your hand,

My best friend is leaving me to go serve his country in the sand.

6 months later i got that call,

Drove to your house and saw that folded up flag knees dropped i lost it all,

Your momma held on to me for dear life, lord i aint ever felt so much pain and strife.

I scream and pleeded it couldnt be true,

I asked your daddy what was i to do without you.

My heart is in Iraq,

My best friend aint comin back,

If i could i woulda sold my soul to the devil, just for one more day with you...

Cause i done traded in my pearls for your dog tags,

I cry everytime i see an American flag,

Cause you died for me, yes you died for me,

I'm thankful for you everyday,

I just wish I could have made you stayed.

I still hear those gun shots ringing in the back of my head,

If i could it would be you live and me dead.
