Heaven's Carnival Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

Heaven's Carnival

Nowadays we're told by charlatans
and politicians of every stripe
how we'll live forever in Eden
on earth and no matter what we
do or don't do as long as we
buy the magic potion or cast
our vote along the party line
change is in the offing

Others of metaphysical bent
espouse loopy panaceas
for the many gullible souls
seeking help for psychic ills
that Christ couldn't cure
or wouldn't if you believe
in free will and word has it
that the man from Nazareth
was a firm believer

Ever go to a carnival
where freaks and monsters
congregate in tents along the midway
like macabre leftovers from silent
movies and vaudeville stages
prancing and strutting in lewd display
and you loved every mortal minute
basking in your decadence

That's free will at its shining best!
